Web Standards

standards

Many companies will overlook something as seemingly trivial as W3C compliance because they don’t believe that the end-user is going to see it. This is absolutely true! Google picks up sites with clean, compliant code more easily than messy, unorganized code.

Good Code Bad Code? Who decides?

Since code is a language that’s read by computers, shouldn’t it have rules just like spoken languages do? That’s where compliance and a group called the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) come in. They created a list of dos and don’ts for writing web pages.

As a company, what are you doing to make sure the rules are followed?

In addition to the w3c guidelines, there’s some additional steps that I’ve taken to ensure websites I create are future-proof or “sustainable”. I have done three things:

  1. Eliminated the “table” and “img” tags.

Even though these tags are considered valid, tables hide their content from Google and screen readers for the blind. img tags are simply images, they have no business acting as layout elements since it would require modifying the original HTML to change a site’s look.

  2. Refrain from using “image swap” javascript.

This is code that exchanges one image for another when you mouse over it. The same effect can be achieved with one background image and three lines of CSS.

  3. Organized css.

Since many of our sites use wordpress, there is no need to hard-code (link to files directly in code) CSS files into a page. Instead, we use the “@import” technique for including additional CSS files

Our Process

When we set out to create new websites, we aim to make them as straight-forward as possible. That’s why when we set out to create a procedure for building sites, we made it straight-forward too, only three steps: Planning and Design, Development, Content and Layout. On this page we’ll walk you through what happens during each of these steps so you can see how easy it is to get your ready for new customers!

Planning and design

In this stage, information is gathered about the kind of site you’re looking for, what sort of functionality it is going to have, and from that we create a design. The design we create can be based on your original site, a whole new creation, or even a template. We adjust the level of customization to fit your needs rather than sell you one big package that leaves you locked down, we want you to have the freedom to enhance your site as much as you like.

Development

After you have decided on a look for your site, it’s time to get down to business. We’re experts when it comes to this stuff! Rather than throw a bunch of components into a program that spits out a site, our sites are hand-coded and built to be quickly changed via stylesheets. This gives us the ability to make standards-compliant sites that look beautiful in every browser.

Content and Layout

In this last stage, we fill your new site in with your own content. You get to choose where the content comes from and how much you have. We have three ways to populate content on your site. 1. migrating content from your old site 2. Have one of our professional content writers do the work for you. 3. You can even add it yourself!
In addition to the options we provide for getting content onto the site we also offer two levels of content creation. The first is a basic level which consists of text and images placed neatly on the site. and the second is called “tailored content” Where each page’s content is thought out with custom graphics and better focus.

Giving Back

A portion of the proceeds of every new web project goes to charity. Here are two that I support:

Lisa Nichols “Motivating the Teen Spirit”

I had an opportunity to experience Lisa Nichols up close and personal in a two day seminar, or should I say encounter? in Oceanside this past September, and I can tell you I have never experienced anything like it. After seeing the profound shifts in the adults who shared this experience with me, I became personally motivated to provide this life-changing experience for a teenager in need who might otherwise never realize their own value and potential.

Lisa has served 35,000 teens and helped to prevent 800 suicides through her inspirational program “Motivating the Teen Spirit”. You cannot imagine the power that can be unleashed in the human spirit when someone is shown how to see through the lies (you don’t deserve it…you’re not smart enough…) and touch their inner strength. Lisa makes a difference to these kids in ways that is hard for us to imagine, although the numbers speak for themselves. Hundreds of kids who went through this program went back to school and thousands reconnected with their families. And we personally met and spoke with a young lady who, although thriving today, had already written her suicide note when she reached out to Lisa.
